“Andrew Juncker is a director in Oakland, CA.” is as formal as I’ll get. I got my first video camera when I was eight and made a feature film starring all of my cats. That film is sadly lost forever, sorry. In my teens I taught myself to edit and animate, and even built my own Steadicam (the professional ones are much, much better). When I was fourteen I made a stop motion film that screened at the Mill Valley Film Festival and SFMOMA as part of a two different youth filmmakers series. I went to The Evergreen State College where I learned to shoot and edit on actual film and studied a wide variety of subjects with an emphasis on experimental media. I worked in various production departments (and learned that I should probably stick to directing) before co-founding a production company in Oakland called French Press Films. We operated for twelve years, during which time I directed commercials and industrials for brands like Samsung, Google, Gap Inc, First Republic Bank, Wells Fargo, Ubisoft, and multiple venture capital firms and agencies. I’ve probably interviewed well over five hundred people on camera, including celebrities, CEOs, and non-actors. I am a writer as well as a director, and wrote most of the scripts (including the concepts and pitch decks) for all of the work we created at French Press. I’m an alumni of The Meisner Technique School in San Francisco, an actor’s training that I took with the express goal of becoming a better director for my actors. I’ve had a few films show at festivals, including two films in the Short Film Corner at the Cannes Film Festival, and more recently Gorilla Wants Banana won both Best Short Film and the Bill Murray Fun is Good Comedy Award at the Twin Cities Film Festival. I’m always working to develop my craft by writing and directing my own narrative projects in my spare time. I have one in the works as I write this.
